300 Main

A national design firm brought me in to create mosaic artwork for the lobby of 300 Main, a Weston Urban high-rise apartment building in downtown San Antonio. They had worked on a project in Dallas that incorporated pieces of a restored mosaic into the lobby of a newly developed housing high rise, and they wanted something similar done in this building.

Yanaguana Garden

PanterAzul (Blue Panther) is probably my best-known work, and it has become the iconic image of Yanaguana Garden. But that project was much more than the Panther. Using an armature of steel, tons of concrete, and thousands of mosaic glass and porcelain pieces, I created sculptures and benches that all together tell the origin story of the San Antonio River, or the Yanaguana as it was known by the Payaya, San Antonio’s indigenous people. I also created the seeded glass splashpads shown in the aerial photo below.

Billboards on Zarzamora

The three mosaic ‘billboards’ that I built on South Zarzamora Street symbolize the spirit and history of the south side of San Antonio. They have a special meaning for me because I grew up in that part of the city, and each one of them represents a memory from my childhood, from the year 1968.

Palacio del Río

In 2014, The Hilton Palacio del Río remodeled its public spaces. As part of that project, they commissioned me to design, build and install two large mosaic murals for the lobby. These pieces, each 14 feet wide and 10 feet high at peak, are Riverwalk scenes that incorporate imagery of plant and animal life on the river.

Mission Trail Baptist Hospital

This 70-foot long mosaic walkway was a collaboration with the Mission Trail Baptist Hospital’s landscape architect, Larry Clark. It is a reproduction — to scale — of a portion of a map that dates back to 1764 and shows the city's five Spanish missions laid out along the San Antonio River.

The Rim

When an architectural firm undertook a project to transform a traffic circle into a park, they turned to me for collaboration on a series of colorful sculptural elements to enhance that park. I built a series of mosaic benches on the site that are meant to symbolize the idea of growth and blossoming of life from a barren habitat.

Elmendorf Lake Park

The San Antonio River Authority (SARA) commissioned me to enhance Elmendorf Lake Park with mosaic artwork. I created an organic, undulating design for a series of benches that run through the park, as well as a 24' diameter ground mosaic mural in the plaza, and mosaic enhancements to various structures in the park including entranceway signs, light posts, and a couple of bus stops. My team and I hand-laid all the tiles.
